Photographing People (Laurie)

I have been photographing portraits in infrared for decades. Often, I have my clients look away from the camera because many do not like the haunting eyes that infrared can portray. I interpret the scene before using infrared to make sure my background does not detract from my subjects; I need separation between the background and my subjects. I can usually previsualize how the image will look, but photographers capturing portraits in a landscape setting should do a test to see what the landscape will look like. I know that water often appears dark, which will create contrast between the background and subject. When the water appears dark, it is not distracting. If there are trees and a lot of branches in the background, keep in mind that the branches will appear dark; you have to be careful where the branches fall because they could distract the viewer’s eye from the face.
